OUR RESTORATION PROCESS

Coral reefs are one of the world’s natural wonders. They are home to spectacular ocean creatures, and in total sustain up to 25% of marine life. Amidst this beauty, they are also critically important to humanity. Coral reefs provide coastal protection, food, livelihoods, cultural heritage, and medicines for up to one billion people in over one hundred countries and territories around the world. But more than half of global reefs are already dead and over 90% are on track to die by 2050, threatening these wonders and their essential benefits. While the best thing to do for coral reefs is for our leaders to implement mitigation measures to stop killing them, scalable adaptation solutions must now be enacted.

The Coral Vita Conservancy restores reefs for the public good. Working with leading reef restoration practitioners, corals are sourced to transplant into threatened reefs where communities are not able to support restoration projects financially. Such reefs include key biodiversity hot spots and fishing grounds for subsistence communities.

Corals used for restoration are not only native to restoration sites, but are made more resilient to climate change threats and grown up to 50x faster than normal rates using breakthrough methods in land-based coral farms. This amplifies the impact, speed, efficacy of restoration through more holistic practices that promote long-term coral reef health.
